NSW Seminar:Self-Care Practical Strategies for Self & Others

Taking time and energy to look after ourselves is essential in whatever role we have both personally and professionally. Join us for an afternoon of focus, learning and exploring practical strategies to improve individual wellbeing and appreciate the connected themes of caring for self and others.

When we are in the caring profession or helping others in some way, we are generally very good at providing advice, encouraging our clients in their efforts to address behaviours and patterns of thinking related to their wellbeing. However, we are not always as good at applying this advice and the actions to ourselves.

While we want to be role models for our clients, it is also important to be able to talk vulnerably about our own attempts at addressing our wellbeing behaviours and how we have paid attention to them.  Paying attention to our own vulnerability will help us step away from being the ‘expert’ and into being more human and connected to our clients’ needs. This event is suitable for school-based practitioners, University and TAFE careers practitioners, Outplacement providers, HR practitioners, and executive coaches.

Presenters:

Dr Jioji Ravulo is Professor and Chair of Social Work and Policy Studies in the Sydney School of Education and Social Work at The University of Sydney. His research and areas of interest include mental health and wellbeing, alcohol and other drugs, youth development, marginalisation and decolonisation.

Jioji will share some of his experience with us in:

  • Recognising mental illness - possible signs and symptoms in our clients
  • What to do when we recognise these signs (practical skills and approaches)
  • When to stop coaching and refer for mental health support (possible services)
  • How to care for our own mental health

Doone Richmond
is a registered psychologist and counsellor working with people who are experiencing work related issues, including work stress, burnout, bullying and/or harassment and performance issues.  She provides a practical and evidence-based approach to her work with individuals and organisations.

In this facilitated discussion Doone will help us reflect on our own wellbeing and how to address things that we may notice or wish to change. We will focus on:

  • Martin Seligman’s PERMA model and its relevance to human flourishing and practical strategies to embed these important elements into our life
  • How to use ACT – Acceptance and Commitment Therapy/Training to be present and take committed action in pursuit of our values with regard to our wellbeing
